California Mishegoss #5-The Holiday Edition 2022
Just a small Christmas gift to one and all. See you next year!
Hi Friends!
Merry Christmas once again. Sorry to bother you but after careful consideration, I thought I owed you a Christmas Gift for all of your support over the years.
I wasn’t sure what to give so I came up with a few stories I felt were worth a read even though they aren’t all California Mishegoss articles.
Out of California
Check out those snow globes above because that’s our first story!
AS THE CLASSIC FILM CITIZEN KANE opens, Charles Foster Kane lies in bed, alone in the dark clutching a snow globe. Inside the globe is a wooden cabin covered in white. After a minute, Kane whispers one of the most famous lines in film history—just one word—“Rosebud.”

Come With Us to the South Pole
Antarctica and Bartending seem to go together since there’s all the ice you could ask for.
WHEN PHILIP BROUGHTON BOARDED A flight to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in 2002, he didn’t intend to become an Antarctic bartender. Following a terrible day at work, he had decided to get away, and, after a Google search and a two-year application process, he found himself on an American research station in Antarctica, working as a cryogenics and science technician for a year and a day.
Here’s a great Atlas Obscura article about it.
Back to California
Palm Trees in LA?
The question is why are there Palm Trees in LA? Great question and it’s answered in this post from Atlas Obscura. Here’s the link.
How About a Little Hiking?
The Panamint Hilton isn’t what you’d call luxury accommodations. It’s a run-down, ratty cabin that’s miles from civilization. But it does have one massiveselling point: it’s nestled within Panamint City, one of the most secluded and well-preserved ghost towns in the United States.

One Last Place in Moro Bay
Morro Rock was one of the first places Patti took me when she took me to the coast for the first time. Since then I have taken numerous pics of the ROCK from different perspectives. There’s just something about it.
I’m not the only one that thinks that either. Read this post from Atlas Obscura.
Thanks!
Again Patti and I want to thank you for supporting us by reading our newsletter over the years. We are going to keep going for as long as we can.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
